The hay bacillus Bacillus subtilis has attracted scientifi c interest for
more than 100 years due to its ability to form heat-stable spores as an
example of a rather simple differentiating organism. Thus, this bacterium became one of most studied model organisms. Moreover, B. subtilis is used in many biotechnological applications and even for food production. Current research still adds novel amazing properties to the
huge body of knowledge on this remarkable bacterium.
